Biyografi

Threshold

This project examines the traces of Shamanism in Turkish culture through people's effort to create a safe space. In shamanic periods, contacting the supernatural and taking on animal form were seen as ways of protection, gaining power, and transitioning into another state of existence. This practice of transformation continued to exist in different forms within cultural memory. The tradition of Tülütabaks, which emerged during the Turkish War of Independence in Balıkesir, can be read as a contemporary reflection of this shamanic thought. Like in shamanic rituals, Tülütabaks undergo a transformation by wearing animal skins; however, this time they act not against the unknown, but to protect themselves from a concrete threat. Thus, fear ceases to be an emotion that must be suppressed; it turns into a functional tool that keeps away evil, protects the space, and defends boundaries. These images of fear are not coincidental in our culture; they persist as visual forms carrying the continuity of collective memory. This project explores how fear is shaped not as a destructive force, but as a protective and structuring force.
